Your Part in Better Schools
There are few statements that are as true as "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" when it comes to public education. Here are a few ways that you can impact the quality of education;
- Register to vote and then do so. From the office of President of the United States to School Board Member, all go toward how education is both prioritized and legislated.
-
Attend school board meetings One of our favorite groups is A Plus Schools in Pittsburg, PA. They developed a program called "Board Watch". Using volunteers they monitor their school board for a variety of different areas from transparency to how easy it is to attend a board meeting. We believe every community could benefit from this program. You can find out more at http://www.aplusschools.org
- Know how your local schools are really doing. You can know where your local district and area schools are doing by visiting your state's Department of Education website. It is usually under "accountability" but if you don't see it you can type in "report card" in the search box. That should take you to the site.
-
Visit a school. Nothing will tell you what is going on more then a visit. Look for the school rules to be posted so kids know what is expected of them. Look to see the attitude of students and staff ~ Are they happy to be there?. Ask to see their volunteer sign in sheet. Notice where the principal is; her office, the hallway?
